Emotions or Values?

Knowing what to prioritize.

There's something I discovered a while ago in my research for the upcoming book, "The Purpose Finder". I came across a study conducted at Columbia University on the subject of "Igniting Passion from Within", where it was observed that at any given time, our passion for work is constantly being driven by two major forces in our lives–our emotions (things we enjoy) or our values (things that are important to us).

In other words, the things we are passionate about and the outcomes we experience are either being controlled by our emotions or by our values. Emotions are transient but values are constant. This idea reveals just how important it is to build our work and life around good values, and not just based on how we feel about the work.
The good news, though, is that we are able to control this narrative to our advantage, whether we are being governed by emotions or values as we have the power to control our emotions just as we are capable of learning good values. And all this is so that when we discover our true work passion, we are able to see it through and don't quit in the process.
Interestingly, I also learned that 'passion' in German is the word "Leidenschaft", which means, "the ability to endure hardship because the reasons to engage in an activity are personally important." This kind of ability (or passion), which is more strongly tied to our values, is what we need to see us through the transient states of our emotions when we 'feel' like giving up.
We often give up when we get to a point where we no longer have enough information to take our passion to the next level. This could be things like how to manage stress–speaking of emotions–or things as complicated as understanding how one's work fit into making the world a better place for all–something we can only do when our values are in alignment with our work goals.
I shared this thought to encourage you to think more about how your emotions and values are influencing your work and life today.
